So many people define themselves by what they dislike, especially on the internet.
It makes sense; drama and controversy are very likely to entice someone to click, while genuine enthusiasm can be much harder to market. And if one’s only purpose is to entertain, ranting about terrible things will almost surely accomplish that goal.
The use of ire for the purpose of entertainment used to bother me very deeply. In fact, it was the catalyst that caused me to begin planning this project.
Since then, I have made peace with the amount of frustration that exists online because it truly does some good in the world, like causing people to act on things that they believe are immoral. And besides, I couldn’t change the internet even if I wanted to.
However, I made the decision long ago that I want to define my own online presence with the things in my life that I like. The things that spark Joy. It’s a fairly simple part of this project, but I feel like it is necessary in order to infuse this blog with genuine positivity.
Valentine’s Day seems like the perfect opportunity to share with you a self-indulgent (and non-exhaustive) list of those things that I love, so here we go:
- the color cyan
- TheTimTracker (YouTube channel)
- The Fault in Our Stars (book)
- Fun Cheap or Free (blog)
- being a plant mom
- indie films
- Night Riots (band)
- The Good Place (TV show)
- Indian food
- You Suck At Cooking (YouTube channel)
- The Wizard of Oz (movie), obviously given my blog’s name
- my friends
- fresh blackberries
- “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve
- clozemaster.com which is a wonderful language learning platform
- the French language
- my family
- my roommate’s cats
- House of Leaves (book)
And that’s it; that’s the blog post.
I had a lot of fun compiling this list and reminiscing about each of the items. If you would like to create your own list of things that you love, feel free to share it in the comments of this post. I look forward to reading each of yours!
